Tripp and I had quite the adventure this week out in Whitefish, Montana. I grew up coming here every summer, and have always looked forward to the day I could experience Montana’s magic with my own little one. Tripp definitely made the most of the long days – he ran around the weekly farmer’s market, jumped into the chilly lake, visited the local train station (choo choos!) and took a ride up the mountain gondola.
Unfortunately getting out to Montana isn’t the easiest or shortest trek (leave it to me to book a return flight through Seattle), and Tripp and I are both excited to have an extra day this weekend to vacation from our vacation.
If you’re around the South Florida area this weekend, here are a few ideas on how to spend that extra downtime (with or without the kiddos).
1. Palm Beach Zoo
I normally limit my trips to the Palm Beach Zoo to the Brew at the Zoo event every fall. But since Tripp loves the fountain area there, I’ve been to the zoo a few times during these hot summer months. This weekend, the Palm Beach Zoo is offering free admission to kids 13-years of age and under, with a paid adult admission (kids under 3 are always free), Friday morning through Monday afternoon. There’s even going to be a DJ and a a cooling station (!).
2. Palm Beach Lake Bike Trail
This is one of my favorite things to do in South Florida when I’m feeling like being outdoors and doing something out of the norm. The trail is 5.5 miles long, and runs from the Palm Beach Town Docks through Palm Beach’s glamorous neighborhoods. If you don’t have your own ride, you can rent a bike nearby. Be sure to check the weather before you go.
3. Delray Art Walk
From 6 to 9 pm tonight, take a stroll through downtown Delray and enjoy the Delray Art Walk, featuring the work of talented, local artists. I’ve picked up a couple of gems at the downtown Delray art events over the years, including this colorful flower painting a couple of you asked about. Best of all, the Art Walk is free.
4. Deck 84
If you’re like me and plan on hanging around downtown Delray this weekend, don’t forget to stop by Deck 84. They’re having labor day festivities all weekend long, including a barbeque and live music on their air-conditioned deck. Their main labor day event is on Monday from 2-5:30.
5. The Girls
If you’re in the mood for something nostalgic this weekend, head out to the Girls in Delray Beach. It doesn’t look like much from the outside, but don’t be fooled. Beyond the old-fashioned pizzeria and ice cream parlor, kids can enjoy petting bunnies and goats at the petting zoo, mining for gems and checking out exotic birds.
